Qiteng Therapy: A Systematic Process from "Waste Expulsion" to "Synovial Repair"

I. The Core Problem in Synovitis: It's Not "Fluid" but "Stagnation and Blockage"

1. What Is the Essence of Synovitis?

At its core, synovitis is a non-infectious inflammatory response of the synovial tissue. When the synovium is irritated, it undergoes hyperemia, edema, and increased vascular permeability, causing synovial fluid to exude faster than it can be absorbed – resulting in joint effusion.

However, many patients focus solely on the "fluid" as the problem, overlooking the root cause: the persistent presence of inflammatory mediators and the accumulation of metabolic byproducts.

In clinical practice, many patients repeatedly undergo joint aspiration, only to have the swelling return within days. Why? Because draining the fluid does not eliminate the underlying inflammation. Once the fluid is removed, it can reaccumulate in about a week if the root cause remains unaddressed.

2. TCM Perspective: "Stagnant Wastes" Are the Culprit Behind Recurrence

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the fundamental reason for recurrent synovitis lies in the combination of wind-cold-dampness pathogens with blood stasis, which obstructs the meridians and impedes qi-blood circulation. Inflammatory metabolic waste accumulates over time in the fascia and synovial crevices, forming adhesions and blockages. These "stagnant wastes" continuously irritate the synovium, leading to imbalanced synovial fluid secretion and recurrent inflammation.

The core therapeutic approach in TCM for synovitis is to eliminate these "stagnant wastes" – to unblock the obstructed meridians and clear the accumulated metabolic byproducts from the affected area. Only by removing this "debris" can the synovium restore its normal function and prevent fluid from reaccumulating.

II. Qiteng Therapy: A Systematic Process from "Waste Expulsion" to "Synovial Repair"

1. The Treatment Chain of Qiteng Therapy

The therapeutic process of Qiteng Therapy can be summarized in four interconnected steps: Warming and Dredging → Penetration → Expulsion → Repair.

Step One: High-Temperature Fumigation – Opening the Channels

The patient first undergoes whole-body herbal fumigation in a high-temperature chamber. The heat opens the skin pores, dilates capillaries, and accelerates metabolism. This step creates pathways for subsequent herbal penetration and waste expulsion.

Step Two: High-Temperature Herbal Application – Resolving Adhesions

With the pores opened by fumigation, high-temperature herbal preparations are applied directly to the affected area (e.g., the knee). The active ingredients penetrate through the open sweat pores into the muscle layers and fascia surrounding the joint, dissolving myofascial nodules and tissue adhesions caused by chronic inflammation. This step breaks down the "stagnant wastes" accumulated at the lesion site.

Step Three: Breakdown and Expulsion – Crust Formation

After the herbal actives reach the lesion, they gradually decompose metabolic byproducts accumulated in the meridians, fascia, and bony crevices into microparticles. These microparticles are excreted through the sweat pores, forming crusts on the skin surface. As the crusts form and shed, the pathological substances are cleared from the body.

Step Four: Activating Self-Healing – Repair and Regeneration

Once the "stagnant wastes" are cleared, the local environment is purified. With this foundation restored, the body's self-healing capacity is activated, allowing normal cells and tissues to begin repair and regeneration. Synovial function gradually recovers, and the balance between fluid production and absorption is reestablished.

2. A "Visible" Treatment Process

A notable feature of Qiteng Therapy is its visual feedback. Through the formation and shedding of crusts on the skin surface, patients can directly observe the expulsion of "stagnant wastes" from their body.

This process not only builds patient confidence but also provides references for adjusting treatment plans. As therapy progresses, the amount of crusting gradually decreases, indicating that the internal "stagnant wastes" are being progressively cleared.

3. Not Just Treating the "Knee," but Regulating the Whole Body

Qiteng Therapy is a process that coordinates multiple meridians and organ systems. While treating synovitis of the knee, the entire meridian network is being unblocked, and qi-blood flow is being improved throughout the body.

Many patients notice not only improvement in their knee condition but also concurrent relief from accompanying symptoms such as insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, and cold intolerance. This is the beauty of the TCM "holistic view" – treating the whole body allows the local issue to resolve on its own, and symptoms subside without being directly targeted.

III. The Unique Value and Suitability of Qiteng Therapy

1. Unique Value: Addressing the Root Cause to Reduce Recurrence

The core value of Qiteng Therapy lies in its root-cause approach – it does not simply relieve swelling and pain but directly expels the "stagnant wastes" that drive these symptoms. This "remove the fuel from the fire" strategy helps fundamentally improve the recurrent nature of synovitis.

2. Suitability Note

Qiteng Therapy is applicable to various types of synovitis. However, for patients with severe periosteal wear of the knee joint or those whose menisci have completely disappeared leaving no joint space, Qiteng Therapy may serve as a palliative measure. It is recommended that such patients undergo evaluation under the guidance of a qualified practitioner to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
